The Middle Ages (Al Andalus and the Reconquista)

During the Middle Ages there were two invasions. One was the Visigoths and the second one was done by the Muslims. This time they came from Africa and everything started in the Battle of Guadalete that took place near the río Guadalete in 711.

On one side we had Don Rodrigo in charge of the Christian Visigoths, on the muslim part, we had the commander Tariq. If you go to the south of Spain to a beautiful place called Tarifa, its name comes from general Tariq!

Let's see a picture of Tarifa!

Tarifa today is an splendid spot for summer holidays
but once it was the door to one of he biggest invasions happened
in the History of Spain. Tariq disembarked here in 710, one
year before the Battle of Guadalete.

But, let's start finding out who were the muslims...

I hope you enjoy learning about history!! 💖💖👀🙈😻

STEM Experience

Dear Students,

EXPERIcience is a STEM video contest that invites children from primary schools to participate in a group from 5th and 6th of Primary Education. This Contest is part of the STEM Talent School project for the development of a Quality, STEM education.

STEM Talent School is an interdisciplinary initiative of the Pontifical University of Comillas in collaboration with different companies and entities to promote the development of the technological and scientific competences of the new generations.

There will be five kids that will be selected among the ones that have shown interest. Not all of you can be selected, neither the best ones, but remember there will be more chances and opportunities, including some of the science projects we are going to work in class.

There is always a door open to those that want to develop their skills in science and want to do more by themselves. Talk to me in that case and we can organise extra activities out of the curriculum.

In the following days, you will receive a notification that you have been chosen. Then your parents will have to fullfil the autorization document that is required. If your parents don’t want to sign there is no problem, but you can not apply, and we have to choose another kid according to the list.

The Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages there were two important invasions in Hispania. First the Visigoths and then the Muslims.

The Visigoths

At first, the Visigoths helped the Romans fight other Germanic tribes. Then, aſter the fall of the Roman Empire, the Visigoths established a new kingdom with its capital city in Toledo. It was called the Kingdom of Toledo. It was established in 507 A.D.

Religion

In 589 A.D., King Recaredo converted to Catholicism. This was an important event in Spanish history. It united the Visigothic kingdom under one religion. Now the Visigoth nobles and Hispano-Roman nobles had the same religion.

Culture

The Visigoths learned to speak Latin and they adopted Roman laws. There were some important cultural developments. Isidoro de Sevilla was a bishop and an important Visigoth thinker. He was the first Christian to write an encyclopedia.

Greenhouse gases

Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth's atmosphere that trap heat.

They let sunlight pass through the atmosphere, but they prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from leaving the atmosphere. The main greenhouse gases are: water vapor, carbon dioxide and methane.

There are more but we are not going to see them here.

H20 Water vapor

CO2 Carbon Dioxide

CH4 Methane

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence has burst into society, and we are using it more or less consciously in many situations, since lot of popular applications such as web search engines, predictive keyboard, face recognition or automatic translators, are using some kind of Artificial Intelligence.

It is true that the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems offers new opportunities to society, but it also introduces new ethical issues that must be addressed. The introduction of AI content in schools through practical projects is the way forward to educate conscious and critical citizens, to awaken vocations among young people, and to foster students’ Computer Thinking skills.

However, most of the existing educational programming platforms lack some of the features needed to develop practical AI projects and, consequently, new tools are required. In this website you will find LearningML, a new platform of AI that kids can use in a secure environment.

How does it work?

Start with easy things. Introduce two or three categories in the entry Data and later try it. Tell me what you have done!

Example:

Country: France

- They speak French

- The Eiffel Tower

- Paris

- Good at cooking

- French Revolution

Country: United Kingdom

- They speak English

- Drink tea

- London

- Big Ben

- The Beatles
