Electromagnets

Magnetism and electricity are forces generated by the movement of electrons. They are both electromagnetic forces – the interplay of these two forces is the basis for many modern technologies.

Remember that there are some metals that have magnetic properties like: iron, steel, cobalt and nickel.

Electromagnets are magnets that are generated by electric fields. They have the advantage over regular magnets in that they can be switched on and off.

Electromagnets can be created by wrapping a wire around an iron nail and running current through the wire. The electric field in the wire coil creates a magnetic field around the nail or screw.

In some cases, the nail will remain magnetised even when removed from within the wire coil. Electromagnets are fundamental to many modern technologies.

Now, you can make your electromagnet at home!

Enjoy!

Here are some of the slides that explain this phenomenom:

English Exercises PET (Easter)

The PET exam has 4 parts: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each one values 25% of the total score. Here is a drawing of the exam with the different parts:

Now, here is the link to the Official Exams done by Cambridge with all the details. You will find the exam format, preparation, scores and practice tests. You don't need to read it now. But if you do, go to "Exam Format" and download the whole exam. You can practice as many times as you wish.

Here is an interview of the speaking part:

SPEAKING

Now, some exercises to practice your PET exam in the other areas. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART

SPEAKING

Now, in this part of the test you’re going to talk about something together for about two minutes. I’m going to describe a situation to you.

A young man works very hard, and has only one free day a week. He wants to find an activity to help him relax. Here are some activities that could help him relax.

Talk together about the different activities he could do, and say which would be most relaxing.

All right? Now, talk together.

Now I’d like each of you to talk on your own about something. I’m going to give each of you a photograph and I’d like you to talk about it.

A, here is your photograph. It shows a family at the beach. Talk about it.

READING

In this exercise you can see some signs with different information on them. You must read it, understand it and choose the correct option. Use the dictionary if necessary.

Reading Part 1 (2)

Reading Part 1 (3)

Reading Part 1 (4)

Reading Part 2 is a little harder because you have to read much more. Practice with these exercises. In the beginning do it slowly and then try to go faster:

Reading Part 2 (1)

Reading Part 2 (2)

Reading Part 2 (3)

Let's work now reading Part 3:

WRITING

Here you can practice with these exercises that are about sentence transformation. In the writing part you will have to write 100 words answering an email and writing a story or an article.

Write the answers in your note book.

Writing Part 1 (1)

Writing Part 1 (2)

Writing Part 1 (3)

Writing Part 1 (4)

Your story must begin with this sentence:

As the plane flew lower, Lou saw the golden beaches of the island below.

Write your story. Use 100 words.

ORGANIZATION

Read the page and everyday you can do 3-4 exercises. Take notes on your notebook of the scores, vocabulary or tips that you may think will help you.

If there is an exercise that you haven't got it right do it again and then move on.

You don't need to memorize all the parts of the exam. Just know that there are 4 different parts: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

One of the days watch the video and pretend to be one of the students. Stop the video and answer as if you were there. What would you say?

How to make a flower with a compass

If you don’t own one, don’t worry. They are very inexpensive to purchase. If you have a choice, I recommend buying the all metal type as they stay in place better than this plastic type. Grab a piece of paper too and let’s get started! (I’m using printer paper.)

First, decide how big you want your flower to be. You can go with any size you like as long as it fits on your sheet of paper. Using the compass, draw a circle on your paper. Once you draw your circle, make sure the compass stays in the same position while drawing the entire flower. It’s good to note where the compass is set just in case something moves and you need to set it back to where it was.

Electromagnetism

Magnetism is an invisible force or field caused by the unique properties of certain materials. In most objects, electrons spin in different, random directions. This causes them to cancel each other out over time. In magnets the molecules are uniquely arranged so that their electrons spin in the same direction.

But first let's understand what is physics!

Watch this video please. It explains very well what is an atom. Bye!!

Types of Intelligence and role models (By Raquel Hernández)

During the talk held on Friday, 12th March we mentioned very briefly some role models to motivate you to choose studies linked to STEM which means: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, disciplines that in the future will provide a lot of jobs. 🕵🏻‍♂️👨🏻‍🎓👩🏻‍🌾👩🏻‍🍳👨🏻‍💻👨🏻‍🚀👨🏻‍🚒

TALENT is the ability we have to do something, to perform or exercise an activity. It is something that we are very good at.

Everyone has one or more talents, and with those talents, with effort and work, you can learn what you want and become ‘cracks’ doing what you like. What are your talents? 🐱‍🏍

Talents are related with intelligence, but the thing is that we can have more than one intelligence, actually there are a lot of them!🙌

Let's see them! And also think which ones do you like most! Maybe all of them?

1. Naturalist Intelligence

According to Gardner, individuals who are high in this type of intelligence are more in tune with nature and are often interested in exploring the environment, and learning about animals and plants. 🎍

People with naturalistic intelligence:

Are interested in subjects such as botany, biology, and zoology

Categorize and catalog information easily

Enjoy camping, gardening, hiking, and exploring the outdoors

Dislikes learning unfamiliar topics that have no connection to nature

Someone with this kind of intelligence is Jane Goodall, a British primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist and a United Nations (UN) Messenger of Peace.

2. Musical Intelligence

People who have strong musical intelligence have a strong appreciation for music and are often good at musical composition and performance. 🎼

People with musical intelligence:

Enjoy singing and playing musical instruments

Recognize musical patterns and tones easily

Remember songs and melodies

Have a rich understanding of musical structure, rhythm, and notes

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is a very good example of this type of intelligence. Do you know her? No?  I am sure you know her. She is Lady Gaga, an American singer, songwriter, dancer, producer and actress. She is known for her image reinventions and musical versatility. Gaga began performing as a teenager, singing at open mic nights and acting in school plays.

“You have to be unique, and different, and shine in your own way.”

― Lady Gaga

3. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence

People who are strong in logical-mathematical intelligence are good at reasoning and logically analyzing problems. These individuals tend to think conceptually about numbers, relationships, and patterns.

People with logical-mathematical intelligence:

Have excellent problem-solving skills

Enjoy thinking about abstract ideas

Like conducting scientific experiments

Can solve complex computations

There are three women that worked in the NASA and contributed heavily with their knowledge to the success of US space race. They are Mary Winston Jackson, Katherine Jackson and  Dorothy Vaughan.

You might know the film ‘Hidden Figures’ based on their real experience working in the NASA. If you can, it is worth to see this film.

4. Existential Intelligence

Sensitivity and capacity to tackle deep questions about human existence, such as the meaning of life, why we die, and how did we get here.

Where do we can from?

People with this type of intelligence are philosophers, writers and thinkers. Also, persons studying religions, moral and ethics aspects.

María Zambrano was a Spanish essayist and philosopher associated with the Generation of '36 movement. She was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award (1981) and the Miguel de Cervantes Prize (1988).

5. Interpersonal Intelligence

Those who have strong interpersonal intelligence are good at understanding and interacting with other people. These individuals are skilled at assessing the emotions, motivations, desires, and intentions of those around them.

People with interpersonal intelligence:

Communicate well verbally

Show empathy

Create positive relationships with others

You might have heard about Malala Yousafzai. She is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate.

She has said ‘One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world’

6. Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence

Those who have high bodily-kinesthetic intelligence are said to be good at body movement, performing actions, and physical control. Athletes, dancers, surgeons, and crafts people exhibit well-developed bodily kinesthetic intelligence.

People with bodily-kinesthetic intelligence:

Are skilled at dancing and sports

Enjoy creating things with his or her hands

Have excellent physical coordination

Remember by doing, rather than hearing or seeing

A good role model of this talent is Carolina Marin. She is a famous Spanish professional badminton player.

Another example is Gisela Pulido, a young woman from Catalonia that has won the 10th Kitesurf World Championship in the freestyle category.

7. Linguistic Intelligence

Linguistic intelligence is the ability to think in words and to use language to express and appreciate complex meanings. People who are strong in linguistic-verbal intelligence are able to use words well, both when writing and speaking.

People with linguistic-verbal intelligence:

Remember written and spoken information

Enjoy reading and writing

Debate or give persuasive speeches

Are able to explain things well

Use humour when telling stories

An example of this intelligence is Elvira Sastre Sanz is a Spanish writer, poet, philologist, and literary translator. I challenge you to investigate a little bit more on her.

Another example is Laura Gallego. Laura Gallego was born in Valencia, on the 11 of October 1977. She is a Spanish novelist of children and juvenile literature, specializing in the fantasy genre. She studied Hispanic Philology at the University of Valencia.

Memorias de Idhún

8. Intra-personal Intelligence

Individuals who are strong in intrapersonal intelligence are good at being aware of their own emotional states, feelings, and motivations.

People with intrapersonal intelligence:

Analyze their strengths and weaknesses well

Enjoy analyzing theories and ideas

Understand the basis for his or her own motivations and feelings

9. Visual-Spatial Intelligence

Spatial intelligence is the ability to think in three dimensions. People who are strong in visual-spatial intelligence are good at visualizing things. Sailors, pilots, sculptors, painters, and architects all exhibit spatial intelligence.

Mr. Doodle

People with visual-spatial intelligence:

Are good at putting puzzles together

Interpret pictures, graphs, and charts well

Enjoy drawing, painting, and the visual arts

Maybe you do not know the woman in the picture, but you know some of the animated films she has directed: ‘Brave’, ‘The Prince of Egypt’. She is Brenda Chapman and she is an American writer, storyboard artist, and director.

Now, that you know a little bit more of the different talents, which talent or talents do you think you have? I propose to write it down and discuss it with the people that know you very well and you can rely on.

I hope you enjoyed this post!! Please write a comment!!! Which one is your favourite intelligence?

Do you have any talent?
