Speaking (PET & KET)

The PET (Preliminary English Test) speaking part typically involves a brief interview, then describing a photograph, and then debating with your partner and making a choice about something. Finally, you will be asked some questions, opinions, likes and dislikes about the topic of the debate.

All the speaking test will last about 14 minutes.

Here are some ideas for preparing for this part of the exam:

1. Practice Describing Photos: Start by practicing describing various types of photos. You can use photographs from magazines, newspapers, or online resources. Describe what you see in the photo, including people, objects, actions, and the setting.

2. Use Adjectives: Incorporate adjectives to make your descriptions more interesting. For example, instead of saying "a car," you can say "a shiny red car." This adds detail to your description.

3. Narrate the Scene: Provide a narrative or storyline for the photo. Imagine what might have happened before or after the moment captured in the picture. This can make your description more engaging.

4. Practice with a Partner: Find a study partner or language exchange partner to practice describing photos together. This will help you become more comfortable with speaking in English.

5. Work on Your Fluency: Pay attention to your fluency and pronunciation. Speak clearly and at a moderate pace. Don't rush through your description.

6. Vocabulary: Expand your vocabulary related to common objects, actions, and settings. This will help you describe the photo more effectively.

7. Time Management: In the PET speaking part 2, you typically have about 1 minute to describe the photo. Practice timing yourself to ensure you can provide a thorough description within the time limit.

8. Listen and Respond: During the test, listen carefully to your partner's description and respond appropriately. You may need to ask questions or make comments based on what your partner said.

9. Use Connectors: Use connectors and transition words (e.g., "in the background," "on the left," "next to") to help organize your description logically.

10. Review Sample Questions: Familiarize yourself with the types of questions you may encounter in this part of the exam. Reviewing sample questions can help you prepare for different topics.

11. Stay Calm: Nervousness can affect your speaking abilities. Practice relaxation techniques to stay calm during the test.

12. Record Yourself: Record your practice sessions and listen to them. This can help you identify areas for improvement in your pronunciation and fluency.

Remember that practice is key to success in the PET speaking part. The more you practice describing photos and responding to prompts, the more confident you'll become.
