Unit 3: Natural: Electricity

Electricity happens when the electron from one atom jump to another atom.

A lightning bolt is a good example of static electricity

Static electricity happens when electrons jump from one object to another, building up charge that can suddenly release!

Examples:

Rubbing a Balloon on Your Hair: When you rub a balloon on your hair, it collects extra electrons, making it negatively charged. The balloon can then stick to a wall because of the charge.

Getting a Shock from a Doorknob: After walking on carpet, your body can build up static electricity. When you touch a metal doorknob, the electricity jumps from you to the knob, causing a small shock.

Lightning: A huge example of static electricity is lightning. When clouds build up a lot of charge, they discharge it to the ground in a big flash, which is what we see as a lightning bolt.

Atoms are the basic unit of matter

Materials that let electricity pass easily are called CONDUCTORS like:

Gold

Copper

Silver

Steel

On the contrary, materials that don't let electricity pass easily are called insulators. Plastic is the best one. Wood is also good. Other can be: rubber, cotton or even wool.

Batteries

Switch

Fuse Box

Pylon

Thomas Edison discovered the light bulb
